Ash Cloud - really that bad?

The recent ash cloud has been the story for several days. There is something about it that doesn't quite make sense.

Shutting down almost all European airports for 4 days? I have never seen that happen in all my years.

How is it that no planes can fly another route? The sky is huge, there's got to be a way to fly around the cloud.

Then on TV they announce that "unfortunately there is no rain to push away the cloud" which is just another non-sense since the cloud is seemingly over 10,000 meters.

Frankly there is something about this whole shutting down of airports that makes no sense. Who is going to benefit on this?

Well if someone knows more about this please comment as I am sure many others don't understand this either.
